Syksyllä rimpautti näyttelyn pääjärjestäjä Lasse Theander ja tiedusteli olisiko allekirjoittanut kiinnostunut kimppaprojektista Art Himsl:n ja Ray Hillin kanssa. Kohteena oli Lassen ´58 Kuutiolintu johon hän halusi jotain 60-luvun alun custom-maalaushenkeä.

I got a call from Lasse Theander, the main man in the Custom Show, asking if I was interested to take part of a group project with Art Himsl and Ray Hill. The goal was to do some serious eyeball teasing for Lasses '58 Squarebird. The theme would be something Watsonesque in early 60's style.

Olin luonnollisesti viilipyttymäisen rento ja keräilin maahanpudonneita leukaluita luontevasti jutustellen, suostuen ikäänkuin harkinnan jälkeen hommaan... Mikä kunnia! Art on Watsonin ohella eräs kuuluisimpia custom-maalareita, hän aloitti hommat jo 50-luvun lopulla ja 60-luvulta lähtien on maalannut runsaasti mm. Oakland Roadster showssa palkittuja rodeja, voittaen itsekin America's most beautiful roadster-palkinnon vuonna 1969. Art on edelleen aktiivinen maalari. Ray Hill on puolestaan tämän maaosan kovimpia ellei kovin custom-maalari, jonka virheettömät työt päätyvät jostain syystä aina sinne voittajapallille kun autoja tai moottoripyöriä, tai jopa rekkoja verrataan toisiinsa. Monikielinen Reiska heittää sujuvasti suomea, ruotsia ja lontoota sekaisin.

I stayed seemengly cool, sorta figuring out if there's enuff time etc... "Ok, I guess I could be fun"...After which I jumped up'n down for about a week just for pure joy! It's an honour to be able to work with such a grand figure as Art Himsl , one of the most famous painter of all times. He was doing the same things as Watson in the early 60's but on the northern California. Art has painted numerous Oakland Roadster Show winners, even gaining the America's Most Beautiful Roadster -title for his own car in 1969. He is still working actively in his Concord workshop and churns out beautiful paint jobs at the rate of a dozen a year.

Ray Hill is about the same as Art, but in European soil, though he's a frequent visitor in USA, working with Sata airbrushes, Chip Foose and other fames. For obvious reasons his artwork seems to en up on the winning podium when motorcycles, cars or semi truck paint jobs are judged. Tiedossa oli siis mielenkiintoinen viikonloppu, Rayn kanssa olemme tuttuja, mutta Art oli toistaiseksi tuntematon meille.

Eräänä joulukuun päivänä Lasse soitti taas ja kysyi, minkä väriseksi auto pohjamaalataan, se on menossa maalarille nyt. Satuin juuri soittamaan suuta Sinkkosen kanssa hänen pihallaan ja bongasin vähäisessä päivänvalossa herran sinisen Hondan. " Joo, pitkän harkinnan jälkeen olen päätynyt metallinsiniseen..."

Täräytin samalla autosta karkean maalausluonnoksen, kun tuntui että tämä maailmanlaajuinen www.internet-yhteys ei oikein meidän maalareiden välillä tahtonut tuottaa haluttuun tahtiin yhteismitallista kuva-aineistoa. Olkoon kuva sitten vaikka keskustelun pohja.

Pääsiäinen saapui sitten poikkeuksellisen kylmänä. Hollywood Hot Rod -takissaan värisevä Art ei varmasti palellut yhtään vähempää kuin me karaistuneet pohjoisen pojat. Vaakatasossa 100 km tunnissa järven yli puhaltava tuuli paiskoi vaahtopäitä seitsenkerroksisten talojen parvekkeille ja maalauspaikkamme oli tietysti hallin siinä kohdassa, josta kaikki kulkevat ulos ja sisään röökille tai katsomaan monsteritrukkeja. Toisin sanoen oli hiton kylmä vaikka oltiin sisällä!

An exiting weekend was coming up for sure, we knew each other with Ray, but we hadn't meet Art so far. One December day Lasse called, saying " we need the colour for the Bird asap, the car is going for the paint booth right now". I was chatting with my pal Sinkkonen during his call, standing by his Honda at that very moment,admiring that beautiful blue colour. " Sure... I've been thinking this matter for a while and come to a conclusion that the Honda blue would work just perfectly..." After the discussion I photoshopped the paint scheme for the car, for something to start with when the D-day arrives.

Easter arrived with a serious siberian wind blowing from the open lake towards the Jonkoping town. The wind carried ice cold breezes which freezed and covered all the northern sides of the buildings and trees. Us northern boys were freezing our butts just as much as Art in his Hollywood Hot Rods - coat. And of course the location for the project in the show was on the very side of the hall where the audience kept all the doors open, walking in and out for the outdoor shows. In other words, it was a good spot but occasionally as cold as in a fridge.

Art tervehti lämpimästi ja osoittautui erittäin miellyttäväksi herraksi. Hän oli tottunut käyttämään House Of Kolorin maaleja, joten ruippasimme sellaisia paikalliselta maahantuojalta. Reiska oli valmis kaikkeen ja oli ottanut mukaan kaikki mahdolliset tarvikkeet. Koska HOK- akryylimaalit saattavat olla hiukan hankalia autonäyttelyssä, päätimme että kuviot teipataan ja maskeerataan ensimmäisenä päivänä ja maalataan suurimmat pinnat illalla maalaamossa vaikka järjestävän tahon toive oli, että koko maalaus tehtäisiin paikan päällä. Suunnitelma koki lievän takaiskun, sillä illalla olikin erinomaisen kehuttu Elvis-show, jonne meidät kutsuttiin. Päätimme suosiolla leikkiä rajausteipin kanssa ensimmäisen päivän.

We shaked hands warmly with Art, who turned out to be real gentleman. After some confusement, what the heck are we actually doing here, we hit the T-Bird. Art had got used to use House Of Kolor -paints, which we asked the local importer to supply for us. Ray was prepared for everything and we decided to spend the first day doing outline taping and masking during showtime and leave spraying the urethane acrylics on an evening session in a local paint shop. The Show Organization hoped we'd do the painting on the spot but we were a bit concerned about all the show cars around us getting messed plus audience getting some unwanted inhaling oxides.

The plan did not work however, the evening was reserved for an exellent Elvis-show dinner, which left us playing more with other liquids than acrylics. Which wasn't bad either...

Päivä 2 oli sitten maskeerauksen vuoro. Tässä vaiheessa todettiin kuitenkin että haluttua kultaväriä ei ollut akryylimuodossa ja House of Kolorin väriä oli tarjolla ainoastaan isolla varastolla, joka ei suinkaan sijainnut näyttelyn läheisyydessä. Y hteisestä päätöksestä maalaus tehtiin illalla vesivärillä. Pienemmät hopeanväriset alueet vedettiin alkuperäisen suunnitelman mukaan akryylillä. Sitä kun ei ollut vesivärinä tarjolla... Ja nyt kun käytössä oli pääasiassa vesivärit, päätettiin että autoa ei siirrellä minnekään vaan hoidetaan homma illalla.

Day 2 and we had to leave the masking for this day because the spraying did not take place in day 1. No worries yet, but we knew that there was a big challenge waiting, in the form of pinstriping. At this stage we got the information that the gold paint for the major area of the scallops was not easily available in 2-stage acrylics, and the House Of Kolor was also out of question. A little head scratching and the decision was made to use waterbased gold. The smaller silver coloured scallops were painted according the original plan, in acrylics. Because major part of the work was done on water based paints, we decided to stay on the show area, doing the spraying after the showtime.

Artilla ja Reiskalla ei juttu sitten loppunut. Allekirjoittanut maalailee tontille tupsahtanutta cocis-sohvaa silla aikaa kuin herrat kiistelevät siitä, kuka puhdistaa kaikki 64 maalauksemme jäljiltä uuden värin saanutta show -autoa näyttelyn lähimmän neljänsadan neliön alueelta.

Highly sophisticated debates about world peace and global warming were carried on during the few free moments of these days. Here we see Art and Ray discussing about who's gonna clean the 64 oversprayed showcars around our booth. Ours truly got involved on this fridge-sofa and couldn't keep up with the talk.

Päivä 3: Art vetäisi ensin varovaisesti hopeat akryylit, etteivät naapurintontin Knut Tiroch ja muut vetäisi hernettä nenään.

Day 3: Art took care of the acrylic silver, carefully with low pressure to be sure not to harm Knut Tirochs or other neighbours vehicles.

Ammattilainen tietää että työturvallisuus on aina tärkeintä.

Safety first!

Overspray Hill puolestaan tuli vesiohenteisellä perässä.

Luonnollisesti erikoistilanteeseen kuuluu, että kun näyttelyn jälkeen alkoi maalaaminen, sammuivat ensin näyttelyvalot ja hetken päästä pamahti kompressori pimeäksi. Sähköt veks... No, moottoritien toisella puolella oli miehittämätön bensa-asema, josta vedettiin hiukka pitemmällä roikalla uudet sähäkät virrat tontille.

Ai niin, sitä tummempaa sävytysväriä ei sitten löytynytkään enää varastoista. Onneksi käytössä oli HOK:n akryylipohjaisia straippivärejä, joihin ei tällä kertaa löytynyt sopivaa straippiohennetta. Mutta niillä sai mukavasti sävytettyä scalloppien reunat...

Overspray Hill follows with the water based gold. And as always in these special occasions, right after the spraying started the show lights went automatically off and following that, the electricity was cut off from the show area, which soon died our compressor... Right, someone runs in the snow storm to the closest wall socket, about a quarter mile towards somewhere with an extension cord.

Oh yes, that fogging for the scallop borders. Didn't find suitable colour mix in the water based colours.... Fortunately we had a good selection of the House Of Kolor striping urethane, which we couldn't use for striping because the thinner was too fast for us. But it worked fine for fogging...

Päivä 4. Se House Of Kolor stripe-väri ei nyt sitten käynyt, kun ohennin ei ollut oikeanlaista... mitäs sitten laitetaan? 1-Shottia? Mikäettei, vähän kovettajaa joukkoon niin kyllä se varmaan kirkaslakan kestää...

Day 4. The HOK did not work because of the thinner,what to use then? We have the 1-Shot and hardener, howabout? It shoud take the clearcoat with the hardener, go for it...

"I hate pinstriping"... purkautui monesta suusta päivänä neljä.

" I hate pinstriping "... was a common phrase during day four.

Sitten vaan straippia putkeen, päivä meni rattoisasti. Skallopit saatiin raidoitettua just sopivasti klo 16 kun näyttely loppui. Skoopin ja takaluukun vapaan käden kuviot päätettiin jättää loppukiriin, olihan tässä yleisön lähdönkin jälkeen vielä aikaa... vaan toisin kävi. Tasan neljältä aukesi seinästä jalkapallokentän kokoinen ovi ja ulkoa alkoi puhaltaa myrskytuulen mukana tasainen lumipatja sisään. Niin jäi sivellin soimaan tulilinnun kylkeen kun lähtö tuli...

Full day of striping, what a hilarious day. The scallop design was striped just for the closing time 4 pm. The scoop and rear deck were still waiting for some freehand stuff, which was left to be done after the audience had left the premises. Unfortunately for us, the entrance delivery doors -large as a fotball pitch- were opened and a wall of snow entered our humble paint space. Work done, the only evidence of the previous hectic workload were the slowly shaking brushes stll attached on the end of the stripe...
