Gold leaf application is performed using traditional methods; we use 22–23.5-carat gold leaf, silver as well as variagated imitation leaf. For adhesion, we employ either oil-based or water-based sizing. When gilding lettering, we combine traditional sign-painting techniques with the application of gold, painting outlines and, shadows.
The gold often requires surface treatment to make it stand out from the background; for instance, we can apply a engine turning or directional burnished finish to the lettering. Beveled edges, meanwhile, lend a three-dimensional quality to the text. Window gilding is carried out on the inside of the glass using a mixture of gelatin and water, resulting in a mirror-like, high-gloss finish.
Gilding is suitable for traditional applications—such as on boats or signs—as well as for vehicles and many other objects. On vehicles, the gold is sealed with a two-component clear coat, whereas on signs, it is generally left unvarnished, as gold possesses excellent weather resistance.
